Our Aims

Consett Churches Detached Youth Project

Our Aims

The aim of our Project is to improve the quality of life of hard to reach young people in Derwentside, raise their aspirations, build self-esteem and offer them new opportunities helping them to build a better future.

Detached work is the core of our work helping us to reach out and engage sometimes challenging and marginalised young people.  Our workers make contact with them in their own environment i.e. parks, bus shelters, street corners etc.  Once a trusting working relationship has been established youth people are offered alternative/diverse activities aimed at improving their physical and emotional wellbeing.  They are encouraged to take ownership of the activities from planning, fundraising and taking lead roles.  Our 4 residentials a year give them the opportunity for new learning skills away from peer pressure enabling them to open up to qualified workers who are then able to address issues either in groups or individuals.  By offering them new opportunities they then feel confident to move on to other opportunities.

In addition to our residentials and activities we run workshops in the villages surrounding Consett targeting current issues i.e. sexual health; healthy eating; drug/alcohol misuse; teenage pregnancy; life skills and confidence building.  This list is not comprehensive we are a needs lead Project.

In addition to running events, our office is open 5 days a week where young people are welcome to call in for support, help with job searches, CV writing, crisis support or just a chat with a friendly face.

Safeguarding Children
